Before I succumbed to the madness of senior year of college, I read a ton of books. All the time. And then I reviewed most of them.
But there are still a few that I did not review. Why exactly is that? A variety of reasons. Sometimes it’s because the book is part of a series and I don’t have anything else to say once I reviewed the first book. Sometimes I feel like the book is too hyped up and popular that it won’t matter whether or not I share my thoughts; that or I just wouldn’t know where to start in a review. And then, sometimes it’s a matter of conflict of interest.
It turns out that out of all the books I’ve read over the past five years, not including the books I just haven’t gotten around to reviewing yet, I have chosen to not review only 16 books. Here they are, from most to least recent:
1. The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls by Claire Legrand: conflict of interest; I work for her agent
2. Speechless by Hannah Harrington: conflict of interest: I work for her agent and I provided some notes for an earlier draft of this book
3. The Midnight Gate by Helen Stringer: conflict of interest; I helped create a reading guide (or something like that) while interning at Macmillan
4. City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare: too popular; that, and I didn’t feel like I really had anything to say outside of the few comments I made to friends
5. & 6. The Alchemyst & The Magician by Michael Scott: you know, I’m actually not too sure why I didn’t review these; they’re part of a series, but I did review the third book, The Sorceress, so…
7. Unbelievable by Sara Shepard: part of a series
8. California Dreaming by Zoe Dean: part of a series
9. Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer: too popular; and I would not even know how to start to put my thoughts together
10. Silver is for Secrets by Laurie Faria Stolarz: part of a series
11. Inner Circle by Kate Brian: part of a series
12. Masquerade by Melissa de la Cruz: part of a series; though, it is interesting to note that I did review later books in this series
13. White Is for Magic by Laurie Faria Stolarz: part of a series
14. The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray: part of a series; also, I think I was too devastated that this trilogy was coming to an end to review it
15. Confessions by Kate Brian: part of a series
16. Cruel Summer by Kylie Adams: part of a series
As you can see, the most recent reason for not reviewing a book has been conflict of interest—though I can’t say that I’m necessarily upset by this trend. It just means that these books are too related to my publishing internships that I feel that I shouldn’t write a review. Since my current internship is quite reading intensive and my boss represents a lot of YA writers, it will be interesting to see what others books I choose not to review in the months to come…

City of Fallen Angels is a really nice addition to the series. Hope you can find time to read it.
